London: An inspirational boost at the Destinations Travel Show

Whether you’re looking for inspiration for your next journey – or like me, inspiration for your next travel article, Olympia in London is the place to be these days (February 2-5). I arrived from Madrid last night, and I’m really happy I got this opportunity. Because already after day 1, my inspiration and motivation has gotten a major boost.

‘Destinations – the holiday and travel show’ is housed in the beautiful venue of Olympia, that fittingly looks like an old trainstion but was opened as an exhibition place 130 years ago. It was recently renovated in 2013, and the main exhibition space – Olympia Grand takes in a lot of natural light. A great place to hide from grey skies like the ones covering London today, and to dream away to more exotic destinations.

Where to?

The many stands offer a well-balanced mix of individual destination’s tourist boards, travel agencies, travel media, travel related products and street food – so it’s no problem at all to spend the entire day in there (open 10 – 5.30pm each day). Especially if you take your time to check out Standfords Travel Writer’s Festival at the far end, which is set up by the lovely Standfords bookshops. You’ll find Standfords in London and Bristol, and I earlier included the Bristol-branch in my: 3 places I love in Bristol).

Michael Palin speaking about his travels at the Stanfords Travel Writer’s Festival

At the Travel Writer’s Festival you will naturally find good offers on travel writing and guide books, but you’ll also be able to experience some pretty awesome travel writers and travel show hosts in live. Today I had the pleasure of seeing live interviews with adventurers like Levison Wood, Simon Reeve and the legendary Michael Palin. They all did post-interview book-signings, which is a great chance to exchange a few words and get a nice souvenir to bring home.

Great meeting the adventurous author and tv show host Simon Reeve

Occasional musical performances and generally good space to move around adds to the atmopshere and a great inspirational experience. I’ll be visiting tomorrow again and already have in mind to come back next year.
