Unique Accommodation: Go rural in the mountains of Asturias
I steer the car up the steep road, make a few hard turns and drive slowly through the quiet mountain-village Llerices. A tranquil little spot near Covadonga, in the region of Asturias in Northern Spain.
We pass a white donkey and a few dogs among the old houses, surrounded by a green and mountainous scenery. I almost feel guilty for the engine breaking the silence. This feels very local, but in the best of ways, and we soon spot “El Colladín” – our rural home for the next 20 hours or so. And we’re already excited.
El Colladín is a lovely and well kept house, and we’re welcomed by Asun who manages this rural accommodation, as well as the bigger hotel just down the street (where a breakfast buffet can be bought). She shows us our upstairs bedroom, which is one of just 5 en-suite double rooms in the house, and then she introduces us to the rest of the facilities.
The three storey house includes a nicely decorated living/dining room where you will find inspiration for excursions, books, a fireplace for cool evenings and a big tv with plenty of options for entertainment. Also, the wifi is strong throughout the facilities and is even reached well from the outside. The house feels homely and warm, and features some lovely handpicked details – but the big bonus for us was the covered terrace with addictive mountain-views.
The terrace is found in front of the house under an authentic “Hórreo”, which the farmers used to store hay and crops in back in the days. In safe height from mice and other pests, at the same time as it created a natural circulation of air around the storage. This hórreo is beautifully decorated with flowers and dry corncobs, as well as light has been installed underneath, which makes it possible to enjoy life at the tables underneath at all times.
What a treat it was to be able to have both our breakfast and dinner out there, and mostly surrounded by no other sounds than the chirping of birds, a few cow bells… and occassionally the call of the local donkey.
Our room was really nice too, with a comfortable and very wide bed, and views from the room to the surrounding landscape. But honestly we spent most our time outside as the weather was excellent. And we liked this place so much that we decided to extend our stay with another night.
During our stay only a couple of other rooms were in use, which meant it was quiet, but that we still had the chance to meet some very nice people. Also, the neighbours around the house seemed very welcoming, and we felt like part of this 20-people village for a couple of days, while having the perfect base for exploring the area.
This house is absolutely perfect for groups or family stays – or couples who just want to enjoy the quietness and the natural surroundings for a few days.
Excellent location between mountains and coast
El Colladín is located in the tiny village of Llerices in the region of Asturias in North Spain. It’s just a couple of minutes drive from the town of Covadonga, from where a steep drive will lead you to Lagos de Covadonga (The Lakes of Covadonga) – one of the natural highlights of the region and the National Park of Picos de Europa. And Covadonga itself is a must-visit for its stunning basilica and not at least the impressive ‘holy cave’, with a small chapel built into the rock.
A 10 minute drive away you’ll find the city of Cangas de Onís, which is famous for its arched roman bridge that spans the Sella River. Here you’ll find plenty of shopping-opportunities, restaurants and outdoor-activity providers, as well as a good tourist information center.
Half an hour’s drive north you will reach Northern Coast of Spain, and if you want bigger cities both Oviedo and Gijón can be reached in about 1 hour and 10 minutes.
