Christmas magic in Luxembourg City

Christmas in Luxembourg 6

Germany is naturally a big hit when it comes to visiting Christmas markets in Europe, but less people might think of heading to Luxembourg for this experience – and that’s a shame. Because the Grand Duchy’s capital is an excellent winter-destination, that I was happy to add to my list of Christmas-experiences this past weekend.

Luxembourg City had even been blessed with a light sprinkle of snow just before my arrival, which gave a major boost to the atmosphere surrounding its market at Place de la Constitution, from where you have an amazing view over the (potentially) snow-clad tree tops in the valley below, and on the hills across the river.

This Christmas market is a good mix of little theme park ride for the kids, as well as food and snack stalls, and shops offering gift items. It’s all topped by a big ferris wheel that lights up in bright colors as the darkness set upon the city.

A short walk down the street to Place d’Armes, brings you to another large market which is more focused on food, with a mix of local and regional Christmas treats, and of course plenty of Glühwein (mulled wine), to help keep your throat – and your hands – warm in the cold. A great place to start a night out in the capital.

If you’re into ice skating (like me), Place Guillaume is the place to go, where a large and partly covered ice rink has been set up in front of the nicely decorated city hall – with the spires of the beautiful Notre Dame Cathedral towering nearby. Here you’ll also find plenty of options to treat yourself with food and drinks, that you can enjoy with the view to the skaters on the ice.

Other smaller markets are found on Place de Paris beside the majestic Avenue de la Liberté, and down in the picturesque quarter of Grund.
