Live from… Ærø: Re-visiting a Danish jewel

It’s been a while since I’ve done one of these ‘Live from….’ posts. And normally I write them to describe my first impression of a place, but this time around I’m re-visiting the wonderful Island of Ærø here in Demmark. Have a go at pronouncing that!

Aeroe, as it’s spelled without our crazy Danish letters, was a first time visit for me last summer, despite being just a short ferry trip from my home island of Fyn (Funen) – and I got so impressed that I’ve wanted to return ever since – and I’m glad I did.

This time I have more time on my hands to visit some of the exciting local businesses that this island has to offer, such as the combined brewery and cigar maker (from own tobacco) Rise Bryggeri and Ærø Cigar. I also enjoyed a lovely lunch in the atmospheric back yard of Den Gamle Købmandsgård that functions as a hub many of the island’s local producers.

Just driving around the Ærø this time of year is extraordinary, with lush rolling landscapes and ocean views everywhere. No wonder this is a hotspot for cycling holidays. I made it to the largest city Marstal where the Maritime Museum is a definite highlight and a must-visit for anyone interested in ships and sea stories of seafarers – or maritime art. You could spend hours in there.

I couldn’t ask for better weather during this trip and at Erik’s Hale near Marstal people were naturally hitting the beach on this Danish bank holiday (Grundlovsdag) – and back in Ærøskøbing I could wander the cobbled streets between colourful houses and go for a “fishy” dinner by the harbour – and later and sunset walk along the marina.

Here in Ærøskøbing I’m checked in at a very interesting and beautifully transformed guesthouse called Andelen Guesthouse. A place that I will introduce you to later on in a dedicated post. But I can reveal It even contains the island’s only cinema. Much more on that later on, like I will also be writing a separate post on top experiences on the island.

Good night & greetings from Ærø!
