Andelen Guesthouse – atmospheric boutique accommodation on the Danish island of Ærø

When you visit the small island of Ærø in Denmark, you’ll get a surprisingly good selection of small hotels, Bed & Breakfast spots and campsites to choose from – but few are as unique as Andelen Guesthouse in the historic heart of Ærøskøbing.
Even before reaching the building itself, you’ll be able to soak up the idyllic surroundings along the cobbled passageway near the town’s central square – or from the back where you can conveniently park your car.

This boutique-style guesthouse is set in a beautifully restored building that was once used as a storage for agricultural products. Since then, it was turned into a kind of a cultural house for Ærøskøbing and today you’ll find the island’s only cinema in connection with the guesthouse. Andelen Bio is officially the smallest cinema in Denmark with just 45 seats, and as a neat detail, you’ll get complimentary tickets when you book a room next door.

Andelen Guesthouse is run by Adam Hobbs who is originally from London. He did the comprehensive restoration of the building himself, before opening the doors for guests back in 2012. Prior to that, he travelled the world while working with tourism groups in far-flung destinations such as India, Asia and Africa. That’s the reason why you’ll find a bunch of exotic elements from his many journeys around the rooms.

The guesthouse consists of 5 uniquely decorated rooms (4 doubles and 1 triple) and a very spacious luxury suite with beds for a family of 5. Both the rooms and the lovely common area are characterized by a relaxed and welcoming feel. It’s all well-balanced with wooden floors and furniture, exposed wooden beams and industrial décor and details – plus the exotic touches found in art and accessories. A blend that works extremely well and creates a warm and homely feeling throughout the building.

The two-level luxury suite with ensuite bathroom is especially impressive. It features the restored, old hoist system, once used to load and unload the agricultural products – a very cool detail that connects the guesthouse to the building’s history. The suite contains a lovely open dining/lounge area with a tv and a hi-fi system. The windows let in a lot of natural light and serve up a beautiful view across the nearby fields. The suite is very spacious and gives you the feeling of having your own flat in Ærøskøbing.

The common area includes a fridge, an ice machine, a microwave and a minibar as well as complimentary tea and coffee throughout your stay. A lovely breakfast buffet can be found “around the corner” at the café På Torvet, which underlines the guesthouse’s excellent location with everything you need within walking distance.
And if you want to explore further afield without a car – bikes are available for rent.
